🏅 The Army Band Years (1986–1989 • 1992–1996)

Two tours of duty. Two eras. One musical identity forged through seven total years of uniforms, parades, concerts, recording studios, and stages across the world.

Brian Grace served two distinct tours as a U.S. Army musician - first from 1986 to 1989, then again from 1992 to 1996. These years critically shaped his musicianship, discipline, live performance skills, and creative voice. He played in multiple incarnations: Concert Band, Marching Band, Stage Band, and Jazz Combo  from Fort Dix, New Jersey to the Presidio of San Francisco, California, with a six‑month world tour in between. Often switching instruments depending on the band’s needs, Brian developed a versatility and endurance that became a formative experience -  one that defined his approach to music for decades to come.

ACT I - First Army Band Tour (1986-1989)

From Basic Training to the Soldier Show - the making of a true multi‑instrumentalist.

Early Years - Fort Dix Training & The Armed Forces School of Music (1986-1987)

In 1986, as a high‑school senior, Brian auditioned for and made the U.S. Army Band. He completed Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, before arriving at the U.S. Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia in January 1987. After six months of intensive study alongside soldiers, sailors, and marines, he graduated and returned to Fort Dix to join the 19th Army Band - the very ensemble that had performed at his own Basic Training graduation. That unexpected symmetry marked the beginning of his first Army Band tour, captured here ina a few early glimpses of the journey from recruit to a full-fledged Army bandsman.

Week 6 of Basic Training at Fort Dix. After a cold week of field exercises in the Pine Barrens and a 15‑mile road march with full gear, the soldiers finally got a few hours of freedom - and Brian used it to duck into a do‑it‑yourself photo booth. And to buy a much-craved Snickers bar.

The 19th Army Band - Fort Dix, NJ (1987-1989)

During this first Army Band tour, Brian performed for Basic Training graduations, civilian parades across New Jersey, formal concerts in New York City and Philadelphia, and a wide range of military ceremonies. He sang for the stage band, played featured saxophone solos, and took on guitar duties in the Army jazz combo - early signs of the multi‑instrumental versatility that would define his later career.

It was also at Fort Dix that Brian discovered the post’s small recording studio, originally intended for soldiers to record karaoke‑style tracks for fun. Instead, he repurposed it entirely - tracking original music, overdubbing multiple instruments, and pushing the engineer far beyond the studio’s intended use. This period marks the true beginning of his identity as a recording artist, revealing a creative drive that would continue to grow throughout his military career.
